The New England Patriots are bringing back their red throwback jerseys and white helmets with their old logo for this Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions.

It has been nearly 10 years to the day since the Patriots wore the fan-favorite uniform combination in a game.

New England donned red jerseys and white helmets when the franchise debuted as the Boston Patriots in 1960. The team's initial primary logo, a blue tri-corner hat, was replaced the next year by a cartoon of a Revolutionary War hero getting ready to snap a football, who became known as "Pat Patriot."

The Patriots wore their red jerseys with white Pat Patriot helmets from 1961 through 1992, and then transitioned to a new look — blue jerseys and silver helmets with a new logo that became known as the "Flying Elvis."

The team did wear the white Pat Patriot helmets with white jerseys featuring red lettering for three games in 1994 in honor of the NFL's 75th anniversary season.

In 2000, the Patriots kept the silver helmets with the Flying Elvis but changed their jersey color from royal blue to navy.

The Pat Patriot helmets and red jerseys did not return until 2002 for a Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit.

The red throwback uniforms were worn four times in 2009 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the American Football League, the first league the Patriots were a member of prior to the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

The Patriots then wore their throwbacks at least once over the next three seasons. The last time the red jerseys and white Pat Patriot helmets were worn was Oct. 21, 2012, a 29-26 overtime victory against the New York Jets in Foxborough.

In 2013, the NFL adopted a new "one-helmet" rule that required players to wear the same helmet when they practiced and played games in an effort to reduce the number of traumatic head injuries. Last summer, the league made the decision to scrap that rule entering the 2022 season, which cleared the way for the Patriots and other teams to wear throwback helmets.

The Patriots have announced two throwback games at Gillette Stadium this year: Sunday's game against the Lions and the Dec. 1 contest against the Buffalo Bills.

To celebrate the return of their throwback look, the Patriots are allowing fans to help choose the design of certain gameday elements that will influence how Gillette Stadium looks and feels during both games.
