Phillip Lim will end 2021 in a green way through his cooperation with Aveda and Volvo.

From algae sequins to carbon-neutral fabrics, 3.1 Phillip Lim is known for advocating sustainable luxury in unconventional ways. The fashion designer ended the year in a green way by extending his eco-conscious mindset to categories beyond his eponymous brand.

Luxury hair care brand Aveda and Lim have collaborated to create a series of special edition hair accessories. The gift sets are based on the themes of botanical art, sustainability and inclusiveness during the holiday season.

"If it makes sense, I am so humble and exhausted, but full of energy."

3.1 Lim, the creative director and founder of Phillip Lim, said: "Through this collaboration, I became a student inspired by Aveda. They guided me on a more prudent and environmentally friendly path." "Very few people know this, but From their support of our backstage fashion show to taking photos, my relationship with Aveda has been more than ten years. Their backstage commitment to sustainability has changed my perspective, and I can do better."

Lim said the Aveda x Phillip Lim holiday gift set combines sustainability with Asian representation.

According to Lim, Aveda stylists follow strict practices in terms of vegan ingredients, reuse of accessories, and preservation of model wigs. This inspired him to re-evaluate all his suppliers at New York Fashion Week, from cosmetics to catering, and hope the entire industry will follow suit.

"As a creator, you will be immersed in the concept of beauty at all costs. We just do things without thinking, but with Aveda, they make me think about the process of completing the image," Lim said.

The Aveda x 3.1 Phillip Lim series is now available in all Aveda salons and stores, including a three-piece hair tie made of 100% recycled water bottles, a wide tooth comb made of 95% post-consumer recycled materials, and hair made of organic Towel cotton and wooden paddle brush, the bristles are made of 90% recycled fiber. The whole set is vegan and cruelty-free.

Lim said that the purpose of this packaging design is to spend the holidays.

Lim commissioned artist Sophie Parker to draw plant patterns on objects and packaging. These patterns are made from FSC certified 100% recycled paper. Lim said the holiday packaging is intentionally designed to be reusable as a gift box or as a sundries box or souvenir box.

"Sophie Parker is known for her plant structure that is so inspiring to me," Lim said. "It is designed in such a way that the gift does not need to be wrapped." Parker is the creative director of WIFE, a Brooklyn-based plant studio known for indoor natural sculptures that keep living plants intact.

From runway to highway: Volvo wants to use the same fabric as Lim.

Aveda is not Lim's only ecological cooperation project. The designer is working with Volvo to launch a limited-edition weekend bag made by Nordico, which is a blend of bio-based materials, including recycled PET bottles and leftover corks from the wine industry. The same textiles used for unisex bags will replace the interior leathers of all Volvo electric cars in the future.

"It's difficult. Sustainability is an over-marketed and over-used term, but we are measuring how we can do better, from the fabrics we use to the way we operate as a business," Lim said.

3.1 Phillip Lim collaborated with Volvo Cars on the passion project, curating a limited edition weekend pack for environmentally conscious travelers.

At the same time, Aveda's partnership has provided support for Lim to continue to strive for representation in Asia. This global brand provides him with a platform to provide inclusive gifts during the holiday season. "Not everyone celebrates Christmas with snow, Santa Claus and sleighs," said Lin, a first-generation Chinese-American immigrant who grew up in Huntington Beach, California. "The way we celebrate is different from our friends. We just reunite with our family through food. That's why it is important to provide a common method for the holidays."

The wide tooth comb and paddle brush are designed to relieve tension on the scalp.

Earlier this year, he joined forces with creatives such as Ruba Abu-Nimah and groups such as Running For Protest to combat racial injustice against the AAPI community. Last month, he filmed a project for the United Nations Human Rights Movement, focusing on his role in the #StopAsianHate movement.

"If it makes sense, I'm so humble and tired, but full of energy," Lim said.

"As a community, its transformation and growth is incredible. It is a gift, despite the pain. It forces me to ask myself, "What is the future of my company and what is its place in society?" "When everything seems to be threatened, I am glad that I chose transformation instead of silence and failure."
