"Top Gun: Maverick," the sequel to the 1986 movie "Top Gun," is now playing exclusively in theaters. The long-delayed movie premiered on May 27, and it's expected to start streaming on Paramount Plus in July.

An official streaming date hasn't been confirmed yet, but Paramount previously announced that its new movies will stay in theaters for at least 45 days before streaming. Based on that, "Top Gun: Maverick" could get added to Paramount Plus as soon as July 11.

Tom Cruise returns to the "Top Gun" franchise as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a US Navy test pilot who is tasked with training a group of young Top Gun graduates for a high-risk specialized mission. The detachment includes Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's late best friend Goose.

Val Kilmer also reprises his role as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, a longtime rival of Maverick's. New cast members include Jennifer Connolly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.

As of writing, "Top Gun: Maverick" holds a "97% Certified Fresh" rating on review-aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics saying it's better than the first movie. The film premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and received a five-minute standing ovation from the audience.

Right now, the only place you can watch "Top Gun: Maverick" is in a movie theater. You can look up movie times near you and purchase tickets on websites like Fandango.

"Top Gun: Maverick" will stream on Paramount Plus as soon as 45 days after its theatrical premiere on May 27. If this release strategy holds true, the movie could hit Paramount Plus as early as July 11.

Recent Paramount Pictures releases have been added to Paramount Plus within the same general release window: "The Lost City" and "Jackass Forever" both hit the streamer after exactly 45 days, while "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" began streaming after 46 days.

Once "Top Gun: Maverick" is available on Paramount Plus, all subscribers will be able to watch the new movie. Paramount Plus offers two subscription plans.

The Essential plan costs $5 a month and includes access to the entire on-demand streaming library with limited commercial interruption, plus select live sports including NFL on CBS. Paramount Plus' Premium plan is $10 a month and lets you stream on-demand content without ads, plus you can watch your local CBS station live.

You can watch the first "Top Gun" movie from 1986 on Paramount Plus or Netflix.

If you want to watch "Top Gun" on Netflix, the service begins at $10 a month for standard definition streaming on one device at a time. Netflix's Standard plan costs $15.49 for high definition streaming on up to two devices. For up to 4K UHD quality and the most screens, the Premium plan costs $20 a month. However, "Top Gun" isn't streaming in 4K on Netflix.

The first "Top Gun" movie follows Maverick as he and a group of naval aviators are given the chance to train in the Navy's Top Gun program. The movie was released in 1986 and has held cultural relevance since; in 2015, it was added to the Library of Congress' National Film Registry for preservation.
